What is Vokker?
Vokker is an online vocabulary trainer which uses the system of index cards. Vocabulary can be practiced in all languages, e.g. Spanish, Japanese or Arabic. This webpage is free and can be accessed after one has created an account for which students don’t even need to have an e-mail address.

Task in the teaching idea
This teaching idea doesn’t really include a precise task; it’s more like a guideline on how to use Vokker in school and how the teacher should get started with his or her students. The students learn how to learn vocabulary outside of school and with the use of new media. There are different approaches to different vocabulary fields. The students can either learn new vocabulary by categories or just type in their own new vocabulary for practice. The vocabulary can now either be paired by a drag and drop function or simply be written down on a blank line.
Usability of this teaching idea
This website can be used for every grade and every kind of topic because every time when a new topic is introduced the students learn new vocabulary which they can then practice with Vokker. As soon as the students have learned how to learn vocabulary with index cards they will be able to use this website at home for practicing vocabulary. Students might be more enthusiastic about learning vocabulary in the internet than using index cards in the old-fashioned way.
What is really nice about this tool is that the students don’t have to log in with an e-mail address but only need a log-in name and can then already start working with this page. This idea is more usable for home-studies; the students get to know a new possibility on how to learn vocabulary but then it’s their task to use it at home themselves.
Own opinion on this idea
I think that this website offers a really good opportunity for students to practice their vocabulary knowledge and I think that for students it is more motivating and fun learning new words with the help of the internet than just using index cards and repeating them over and over again. I would definitely use this method in future classes and can only recommend it to every language teacher. A nice detail of this page is that the students can keep track of their improvement and can see how they did in the last couple of weeks of learning.
